Paul Krugman of the New York Times recently wrote a column on this subject since
two New York Hospitals had filed a racketeering lawsuit against the United Health
Care Group. The hospitals claimed United mislead clients about provider status
in order to avoid paying the correct amount of the medical bill. Oddly, United had already
settled claims and paid restitution to plan members in a suit brought forward by the
attorney general.
I have seen in my own practice other carriers do the same thing repeatedly in order
to cheat and save money. That companies can be allowed to cheat and steal repeatedly in
order to give their top management huge salaries and without penalty strikes at the very
core of what it means to be an American. But then to go on and deny care to people
which can lead to their misdiagnosis mistreatment and even death is criminal. Yet these
companies continue to do this without any difficulty. Managed Care is really managed cost.
Managed cost is essential to health care but when it done without regard to ethics it
is a criminal matter. Recently, an official from a Chinese food factory was executed for
allowing tainted food. I am not asking for executions of health executives however they
must be brought to justice and not be allowed to hide behind the corporate shield. When
someone dies because of an insurance company policy denying appropriate care the CEO should
be tried in criminal court. When Enron fell many people lost money and executives were
prosecuted. Enron had no more money to make any more huge political donations. Here people are allowed to die and everyone looks the other way since the companies
are in the black and continue to make huge contributions to both political parties. To repeatedly
violate the law demands action. Capitalism has been a wonderful thing in this country because
the people running the corporations had integrity and thanked God for their freedom and understood
that freedom is empty without justice.
